HISTORY OF THE PLEIN AIR ARTISTS AT LAKE O’HARA

The outstanding beauty of Lake O’Hara has inspired artists for more than 100 years.

Since the Canadian Pacific Railway reached Hector, BC in 1884, plein air pioneers have hiked or ridden on horseback to paint the rugged peaks and emerald lakes. The CPR encouraged artists like F.M. Bell-Smith and A.C. Leighten by giving them free rail passes so their work could popularize the area for the growing tourism market. They could camp at the lakeshore or, after 1919, at the Elizabeth Parker Hut built by the Alpine Club of Canada. Group of Seven artists J.E.H. MacDonald, Lawren Harris and Arther Lismer all painted Lake O’Hara. MacDonald in particular was so enamoured of the landscape that he spent seven summers there, creating more than 200 sketches and paintings. Other artists included Carl Runguis, Walter J. Phillips, John Singer Sargent, Peter and Catherine Whyte, Belmore Brown, and a steady stream of more contemporary artists inspired by the landscape and their legacy of works.
